· Why did you choose to review this particular article?
I choose this article because there are many children that are born out of wedlock. I am interested to see if this affected their development. My paper is about the effects of family structure on childhood development. This could be any type of structure. This article helps me understand the structure of having parents together or married compared to not having parents together or not married. In the abstract the article states, “This hypothesis assumes that the benefits of marriage for children hinge on fathers’ capacity to promote child development because children in unwed families almost always live consistently with their biological mothers and inconsistently or not at all with their biological fathers.” This is basically stating that fathers promote learning such as the child’s education level and age. Family structure is the main key to this article.

· Brief Summary:
This article states that “Children living in married homes have better benefits than children living in unmarried homes.” There are more and more children being born to unmarried parents. The government is trying to promote people getting married before they have children. They call this “healthy marriage.” The article says that, the government should be promoting marriages before children, but they should also promote that children in married homes will enhance child development. The studies show that fathers are the ones that help enhance the child development from birth to about 3 years. In unmarried homes, most of the children are with their mothers and are not with their fathers enough for them to enhance their child’s learning ability. The article states “It is reasoned that a child’s likelihood of being born and raised in a married versus an unmarried family is partly a function of father characteristics, such as education level, cognitive ability, and age, which relate both to the likelihood of his being married at the time of a child’s birth and his capacity to promote positive child development.” The hypothesis of this article is found to be true; children do have and enhanced child development in married homes over unmarried homes. The study not only looks at educational benefits, it also looks at the child’s well being.

I choose this article because there are many women who work during the child’s first year of life. I am interested to see if this affected their development. My paper is about the effects of family structure on childhood development. This could be any type of structure. This article helps me understand the structure of having their mother around while they are developing. The abstract stated, “With increased numbers of women employed in their children’s first year of life and with increased attention being paid by parents and policy makers to the importance of early experiences for children, establishing the links that might exist between early maternal employment and child cognitive outcomes is more important than ever.” I choose this article because I wanted to view the affects working has on children.

· Brief Summary:
This article looks at working mothers and the effects on their children. The abstract stated, “With increased numbers of women employed in their children’s first year of life and with increased attention being paid by parents and policy makers to the importance of early experiences for children, establishing the links that might exist between early maternal employment and child cognitive outcomes is more important than ever.” She found that there are negative effects that could harm their child’s development if their mother is working during the child’s first year. Brooks-Gunn states, “Although quality of child care, home environment, and maternal sensitivity also mattered, the negative effects of working 30 hr or more per week in the first 9 months were still found, even when controlling for child–care quality, the quality of the home environment, and maternal sensitivity. Implications for policy are also discussed.” For some mother it is important for them to work to get money to raise the child.
